Why the drills are shaped the way they are

The Conversation Drill follows the research on speaking practice rather than a house method:

One scene, three runs. Repeating the same speaking task is the most reliable way to build fluency (task-repetition meta-analysis, 2025; Nation's 4/3/2). We drop the shrinking time limit because Boers (2014) showed it buys fluency at the cost of accuracy.

Run 3 comes days later. Suzuki and Hanzawa (2022) found massed repetition cuts pauses but slows articulation and breeds parroting; spacing the last run avoids that.

Phrases, retrieved not reread. Formulaic chunks make speech sound fluent, and filling a gap from memory beats copying (Serrano et al.; Sonbul). They then enter a spaced review queue.

No interruptions, then three fixes. During a run the tutor only recasts. Afterwards it prompts you to self-repair before giving the answer, the ordering the corrective-feedback meta-analyses favour (Lyster and Saito 2010; Li 2010).

A monthly check on the same task. One cold run on an anchor scene plus an elicited-imitation battery, a validated quick measure of proficiency (Yan et al. 2016), so month-over-month comparisons are fair.
